Perfection? Hanger Alignment Gauge (HAG) from Abbey Bike Tools

Blue tools are Park Tools, green tools are Abbey Bike Tools.

Abbey Bike Tools is a small US based outfit that make high quality tools, appreciated by pro mechanics for their bombproof construction and functionality.
Their hanger alignment tool, the HAG, is a favourite.

There is a reason you should have a hanger alignment tool. If you have a 10, 11, 12 or even 13 speed cassette, space between cogs is not much and besides a perfect set-up of the derailleur you also need a perfectly straight one, means you derailleur hanger needs to be straight. Derailleur hangers can easily bend though and if you are not aware of that and fix it, you could spend endless time trying to get rid of that poor shifting and noise.

Derailler hanger adjustment tools usually work by attaching one end where the derailleur would go, and setting another end so it touches the rim. If your hanger is straight, then your tools aligns with the rim all around the 360 deg of your wheel. If it doesn’t, then you can softly push the tool and hanger so it does.

What makes the HAG stand out are several features:

  • Precision: the tolerances in part of the tool that are as tight as 0.0063mm are unmatched
  • Weight: Its lighter than hanger adjustment tools from other brands, but still as sturdy, if not sturdier
  • Functionality: Its very compact, and has thought-out details such as the top half of the tool that rotates out of the way of fender stays and frame tubes.
  • The tool is currently sold out on their website, but in stock again on Feb 15. Head over there to check it out and other great tools they have!
