Crowdfunding Monday – Dashbike: camera, proximity sensor and rear light in one device

Dashbike is a  multifunctional rear-mounted device, that includes light, proximity sensor, camera and fall detection. It also has a GPS sensor for location data.

Currently there are two products on the market that are somewhat in the same space: The Garmin Varia Radar, that is a rear light combined with a radar that notifies you of approaching vehicles, and the Cycliq6, that incorporates a camera into the rear light.
While Dashbike looks rearwards like the Garmin Radar, it does not notify you of approaching vehicles. Instead it uses the input from the sensors to detect the speed vehicles are approaching at, and the proximity at which they are passing, and if a vehicle passes too closely (closer than 1.5m), it will save the camera recordings and other meta data such as location retrospectively. Hence, as opposed to the Cycliq camera, there is no continuous recording. This has the great benefit of making the device legal in countries such as Germany, that don’t allow continuous recording due to privacy laws, and the evidence from the Dashbike is fully admissible in court due to the restriction of the device saving recordings incident-based only.

With the accompanying app, all the camera recordings and data can be viewed, and additional insights gained, such as the number of cars passing at close proximity and the location of those incidents. Also due to the integrated GPS, ride data such as total ride distance and average speed is captured.

Dashfactroy, the makers of Dashbike, point out that the insights that can be gained from accumulated user data can be used for improvement of cycling infrastructure by eliminating danger spots.

One important thing to mention is that the device only works in country with right hand traffic, due to the orientation of the sensors towards the left side.

Thanks for the information! That is a huge delay, and as I can see from the comment on Kickstarter, their communication is less than idea.I will reach out to Dashbike for comment. If you are a backer and receive any news from them, feel welcome to post it here.
