SPEECO ABB aero breakaway handlebars
Update: For a complete list of all options to go narrow and aero on a road bike, check out this article on YellowCrank!
Together with Jan-Willem van Schip, a Dutch track, and road pro, Speeco developed the Speeco ABB aero breakaway handlebars. With a 70mm integrated stem, the rest of his reach was added to his handlebars, giving maximum stability, comfort, safety, and drag reduction, by allowing him to rest his lower arms on the bars while riding on the hoods.
These handlebars are now also available custom-made to your own specifications.
A 70mm 17-degree stem is integrated into the handlebars, suitable for most integrated cable setups. (Including a front brake cable through the forks). Then the needed length is added to the handlebars to achieve your desired reach. The forward-extending tubes of the handlebar have a groove that runs lengthwise in the middle to increase comfort and stability when resting your underarms on them.
Width is not specified on their website, but they look much narrower than traditional bars. The drops logically flare out. Brake/Shifter position is the same as on a standard setup. A custom Wahoo bolt computer mount that integrates nicely with the bars is available.
The ABB handlebar complies with UCI’s current guidelines. EDIT (Jun 2021): The bars are banned by UCI now.
Given that SPEECO is a provider of custom carbon handlebars (they also do TT setups), their handlebars don’t come cheap: They cost EUR 1500, and a EUR 500 deposit is required.
