ET-one – The pedal that also functions as a lock
I noticed this a bit late, and it’s very likely to miss its funding goal, but hey, it’s Crowdfunding Monday at YellowCrank, and I love to look at designs that I have never seen before. The ET-one is an attempt to integrate a lock into a bike, so that you don’t have to carry any with you. It’s not the first attempt by anyone, and believe-it-or-not, also not the first one to hide a locking mechanism into a pedal.
How does it work: A short lock shackle/steel bar (that you do have to carry with you or attach to the bike via a holder) is inserted into the pedal body and -axle, blocks your rear wheel and simultaneously makes it impossible to turn the pedals. The pedal body itself house the locking mechanism, for which you get a regular looking key.
The limitation of the lock is the same as for all lightweight locks: They protect against opportunity theft, but will not keep a determined thief with time on their hand from stealing your bike. The pedals fit on almost all standard bikes, but of course due to the pedal design, this is likely a solution for commuters and casual bikes only.
