The Green Disc – quick and smart chain lubrication
It’s time again for Crowdfunding Monday, this time with a campaign for an updated version of German company FLECTR’s Green Disc chain lubrication device.
What it is
The Green Disc consists of a housing and a freely spinning wheel that, due to its sponge-like material, simultaneously houses the lubricant and serves as the applicator. The Green Disc can accommodate up to 30 ml of oil and is leakproof. You can use FLECTR’s own biodegradable lubricant or any other lubricant, with the exemption of solvent- or waxed-based ones. This is the third iteration of the product and the third Kickstarter campaign for it. Improvements are made to the material of the application wheel.
How to use the Green Disc
Press the disc slightly onto your chain and let your crank rotate backward—three turns on the outside, three on the inside of the chain. The lube penetrates the chain while the wheel picks little parts like metal shavings. Due to the softness of the applicator wheel, it adjusts to the chain’s surface and reaches the inner parts of the chain links, from where the lubricant can penetrate deeper. You can directly apply new lube if your chain is dirty or wet. If the chain is dirty or wet, you will still need to clean or dry it first, for example, with a rag.
Why it is a smart way to lube your bike
- Due to the direct-contact application, you’ll avoid dripping of lubricant onto the floor or the wheel
- The application is quick (around 30 sec), and very simple
- FLECTR estimates, that you can save up-to 90% of lubricant with their Green Wheel as compared to dripping it on your chain
- The application wheel lasts for over 70 applications, potentially much longer, and replacement wheels are available
- The small size and the shape make it simple to bring along on a trip
The Green Disc is not the only drip-free application device on the market; Finishline, for example, has its No Drip Chain Luber™, a standard bottle with a spongelike top applicator. I do, however, like that the Green Disc can be used with a lubricant of your choice.

The housing has an almost unlimited service life, as it is not exposed to mechanical stress during use. It is made of recycled plastic.
The inner lubricator wheel is even compostable as it is made of a compressed fiber fleece of natural material. If you use it with FLECTR’s biodegradable lubricant, you can compost the wheel at the end of its life. Due to less waste in the application, you reduce your impact on the environment.
