BikeBox – a very light, sturdy and foldable transportation box
At Eurobike, South African company BikeBox, founded by Christine Collins, showed an improved version of their bike box made of corrugated polypropylene. The new box is made in Germany, unlike the old version manufactured in South Africa. The Bike Box packs compelling advantages compared to other forms of bicycle transportation bags or cases: It is incredibly lightweight (at 5kg for the smaller box and 5.5kg for a bigger box), and when unused, it folds completely flat. But is your bike stored safely inside? I do think so. It is widely accepted that even regular cardboard boxes are very safe, and I would argue even safer than some soft bike bags, where it’s not uncommon to hear of cracked seat or chain stays even with more expensive bags. The BikeBox further has innovative additions to protect critical areas, such as chainset and rear derailleur. Another question I asked the founder was about durability. She reassured me that this was no issue. Boxes out of that material are used in the automotive industry to ship parts and are being reused many times over over several years.

The bag is simply locked with red zip ties, that are supplied with the box.
Wheels can be purchased as an add-on. They are attached to the bottom with velcro, and in addition, the belt that runs on the outside of the box can be threaded through. Two sizes are offered — 140 x 80 x 30 cm or 120 x 78 x 25 cm (from spring 2022 onwards) — depending on the size and type of bike you wish to transport (the bigger one fits a 29er), and both fall within typical airline limits for maximum size.
