SRAM Recalls 12-speed Dropbar Shifters – What to do

In October of 2023, a Service Information Bulletin hinted that SRAM was coordinating with the CPSC to initiate a recall for their 12-speed dropbar shifters. Now, as of February 2024, that recall has been formally announced. Owners of any SRAM 12-speed shifters bought as standalone products should pay attention to this update.

The initial bulletin pointed to an over-application of thread locker on the clamp bolts as the reason behind the recall. However, the official recall notice from the CPSC succinctly states that “the clamp bolt on the brake lever may loosen, presenting a risk of a crash to the user.” This recall encompasses all SRAM 12-speed dropbar levers purchased separately for upgrades or replacements. If the levers were not part of a new bike assembled by a dealer, they fall under this recall. This includes various SRAM eTap AXS levers: Red, Force, Rival, and Apex shift-brake models.

The good news for most customers is that the remedy appears to be straightforward. According to SRAM’s recall instructions, the problem does indeed relate to the quantity of thread locker applied. They have outlined an easy method to address the surplus – a fix that most individuals should be able to manage themselves.

Following the instructions provided in this video, you’ll need to loosen the clamp bolt by two complete turns and then tighten it back to 6nm of torque. This step should be repeated two or three times to clear away the excess thread locker. Then, you should loosen the fixing bolt by three complete turns, adjust the lever to your preferred position, and secure it again at 6nm of torque. If, after these steps, the lever still doesn’t stay put, it’s time to visit your local dealer. Additionally, if you’re uncertain about performing this fix on your own or you don’t have the right tools, it’s best to have your local dealer handle it to ensure it’s done correctly.
